The Two Moon Spirits

Two young moon spirits, the Great Lupus and the Maiden Selene, stood arguing by the shores of time. They had finished their training and had arrived to be assigned a moon to protect. Above the great shore were hundreds and thousands of moons, and one gently came down. This moon was to orbit the Earth. Both spirits had arrived at the same time, and both laid claim to the new moon.

They eventually came to a compromise: Selene would manage the moon from the stars, keeping everything in balance; Lupus would manage the moon from Earth, guiding the creatures who are lost in the dark. They agreed that if one stopped performing their duty, the other would claim the moon as their own.

Today, the Earth is not always in balance, and there are days when the clouds are too thick for the moonlight to come through. However, neither spirit has yet claimed the moon. Instead, they call to each other for aid when one is overburdened. I think they forgot about their deal a long time ago.
